Mental Health Checks to Incorporate into Your Workday

A healthy workplace culture not only results in happier and healthier employees, but it enhances productivity, too. That’s why it’s so important for companies today to not only embrace mental health but to take an active role in helping their employees foster positive steps to achieve mental wellness.

People who are healthier mentally often experience reduced levels of stress, which leads to reduced levels of anxiety and depression, a lower risk of developing chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure, and increased satisfaction.

With our lives becoming more and more hectic by the day, it’s essential to take a step back and check on your mental wellness on a consistent basis. Here are some ways to incorporate mental wellness checks into your workday.

Are You Managing Your Time?

Time management is one of the most fundamental practices of self-care. Why? Because when you’re managing your time well, you’re ensuring that you’re giving every task the time you need to complete it in a timely fashion with your most focused effort.

In addition, proper time management allows you to integrate other important non-work things into your daily routine — including proper breaks to eat, move around and step back.

If you’re not great at time management, a good place to start is by beginning every day by creating a To Do list, prioritized by importance. Make sure to schedule in time for breaks, and don’t skip anything.

Do You Feel Calm?

Even when you’re up against a deadline and things seem chaotic around you, it’s important to have a calm demeanor. The environment in which you work should make you feel comfortable and contribute to your productivity, not take away from it.

You can do this in simple ways such as putting photos, plants and/or other things on your workspace that make you feel calm. If you’re feeling stressed or “up against it,” take a moment to look at these items and really experience the calm they bring you.

It’s also important to create appropriate and clear boundaries. If you have the ability to do so, close your office door when you need to focus. If you need a moment to yourself, get outside — if possible — to clear your head.

Have You Moved?

In today’s workplace, it can be easy to find yourself seated at your desk for eight hours straight, with what seems like no break. Not only can this be damaging to your physical health, it can be to your mental health, too.

Some people don’t have the luxury of sitting near a window to look outside, which makes getting up even more important.

Everyone should work some sort of physical movement into their workday. On your scheduled breaks, get outside if you can to walk around and breathe in fresh air. If you can’t get outside, make sure to get up from your desk and walk around.

The physical movement will help to increase blood circulation and amp up the production of certain endorphins that will bring you happiness and calm.

Have You Eaten Well?

Many studies have found that there’s a direct correlation between what you put into your body and how you feel mentally. When you eat well and hydrate properly, you’re more likely to feel mentally better than when you don’t.

Work isn’t always the best place to encourage healthy eating and hydration. You might tend to grab something quick and easy to eat and drink, rather than thinking about what you’re eating and drinking.

A microwave meal and a soda sometimes can seem more appealing than a prepared salad and water — especially when you’re short on time.

A great way to shift this narrative is to do proper planning at home before work so you can prepare a healthy and delicious lunch and snacks. It’s also a good idea to have a large container that you can fill with water so you can hydrate throughout the day — even when you haven’t left your office chair in a while.

While you’re at work, you can ensure you’re eating and hydrating well by prioritizing your lunch breaks. Don’t work through lunch, if you can avoid it. Take your allotted time to eat your healthy prepared meal, and enjoy the break that your body and mind so desperately need.
