Appealing to Gen Z in the Workplace

Generation Z is quickly making up an increasing percentage of the U.S. workforce. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, for instance, projects that Gen Z will comprise 30% of the total workforce in the U.S. by 2030.

This shift in workforce makeup is happening as members of the oldest working generation, Baby Boomers, are leaving their jobs for good. As a result, companies need to quickly figure out how to appeal to Gen Z in the workplace, if they haven’t already.

Here are some ways to do so.

Build a Solid Culture

Gen Z is motivated by many different factors than generations before them. In fact, most value a solid work culture over traditional factors such as salary and time off.

Among the most important values for Gen Z, according to a Monster survey, is whether a company is committed to diversity, equity and inclusion. Companies that foster a workplace culture that is diverse, inclusive and equitable are more likely to attract workers from Gen Z.

You can do this by creating resource groups at your company that are focused on supporting employees who come from underrepresented groups, ensuring that their voices are heard and incorporated into the decision-making process.

Communicate Your Values and Stand Behind Them

Members of Gen Z want to work for a company that stands for something that align with their own personal values. This cohort of the workforce prioritizes having a better balance between work and “life,” they are more attracted to businesses that offer flexible schedules.

In addition, companies that are socially conscious tend to attract and engage with members of Gen Z better. It’s important that businesses weave these values — and their commitment to them — into the very fabric of the company.

Support Their Development

Workers from Gen Z don’t settle. They’re very ambitious and want to always learn so they can excel in everything they do.

Companies can speak to this characteristic of the generation by offering plenty of opportunities for employees to grow. There are many ways to do this — from mentorship and professional development programs to simply outlining a clear path for how a new employee can make a long-term career at your organization.

When you invest in your workers’ futures, you’re showing them you value them more than just the work they do today. While there’s obviously the risk that they could take the knowledge and skills they’ve gained from you elsewhere, the fact is that these professional development programs actually engender Gen Z more to you, and they often remain loyal as a result.

Offer Creative Benefit Plans

Just about everything that Gen Z prioritizes in the workforce is different from the older generations before them. And benefits fall right in line.

While members of this generation still value traditional health insurance plans and retirement savings accounts, they also desire a benefits package that is inclusive and diverse. What this means is that employees want to feel as though they are being heard on a personal level from a benefits perspective.

Not every employee will value the same things — and this goes for within Gen Z as well. For instance, one employee might prioritize paternity leave, while another might value mental wellness support services.

The challenge for companies is how can they serve all these employees with different priorities and values? The simple answer is to offer a benefits package that’s diverse and has a lot of options.

When companies provide a benefits package that has many different features and offerings, employees are able to pick and choose which ones to take advantage of. This is a great way to show employees that you care about them as individuals, as they can personalize their benefits package.
